This was a little bit of a cultural shock as Britain ignores halloween for the most part (although children are keen on the licence it gives them to extort sweets with menaces from the elderly), because it's too close to Guy Fawkes' night.

We ignore Halloween in NZ too, mostly. I saw a group of kids (probably around 12-14ish) travelling on the ferry the other night to an early Halloween party, though. It was the final proof that NZ totally does not get Halloween. One was dressed as a witch, but the others were, in ascending order of not-getting-Halloween-itude: a soldier; a hippie; a princess; and a hospital nurse. I don't think we get enough opportunities to dress up in this country.

Brunnen-"the obvious question, considering that this is the ferry to *Waiheke* we're talking about, is how I could tell that somebody dressed as a hippie was really going to a costume party"G
