It's not just the broom, your inventory is missing something else from the mansion, something that will help you get further along until the jewel bug get figured out.

Remember your character has a short attention span...sometimes you have to search quite a bit to actually find something he wants to take.

"I did miss a room the first time I searched the mansion. I'd lost the jewel before I found the broom. There is nothing I can do now in the mansion - I've tried every option many, many times."
