Thanks - I'd completely managed to miss a part of the mansion. Anyway, I've now got a ring and a wand, and come to another standstill. It may be that there is something I can do (I've only been stuck for 15 minutes or so), but there are no extra options at the remaining puzzles and no sign of the jewel, so I've rather lost confidence in the "try everything everywhere" approach.
