A few times recently I've found references in American pop-culture (books, music, etc) to treating someone "like a red-headed stepchild". It's now happened often enough that I'm sure it means something.

How are (or "were", perhaps) red-headed stepchildren treated? Why were they treated any differently to blond- or brown-haired stepchildren?
