"Flowers for Algernon" was actually a short story. It may have later been re-written into a novel; I don't know. That seems to be a popular trend with successfull short stories in the science fiction genre. Some examples I can think of are "Nightfall" and "Bicentennial Man," both by Asimov.

It was the short story that I read, and I may have been moved to tears. It's definitely a tear-jerker story. I've seen the Matthew Modine film. I rented the older film, "Charlie," but coudln't get into it for some reason.
