gas prices and collectors

On a Cushman motor scooter forum, there was a lot of complaining about how the price of gas made it impractical to attend scooter meets any distance from home. Hauling a scooter collection takes a large rig that uses a lot of gas. After reading several of the complaints, I posted this:

The price of gas is messing up our hobby. I guess it would be worse
if we collected tractors or Army tanks, but hauling a load of
Cushmans involves using vehicles that get less gas mileage than your
average economy car.

On my way back from Cochran, I set the cruise at 68 and stayed over
in that old rough right lane just to save about a buck. If people
are staying home because of the price of fuel, it doesn't show
on the interstate where the traffic is still heavy.

I guess I will have to concentrate on my De-Liar collection. The
whole thing including the case weighs about 10 pounds and takes up
less space than a suitcase. When they start having De-Liar meets, I
can throw the collection in the trunk and take off at 35 mpg. Heck,
I could afford to go to a De-Liar meet three or four counties away.

There must be a lesson in there somewhere. Why not start collecting
something small and light instead of those big old heavy scooters?
You could collect baseball cards, thimbles, campaign buttons, state
quarters, bottle openers, overall buttons, brass keys, key chains . . . . Just
think how exciting the meets would be. I would certainly show up at
meets like that. I could be the No-Doz vendor.

Anyway, if you actually do give up collecting scooters and start
collecting feather dusters, give me a call. I buy scooters. Have
(small) truck, will travel.
Howard
