Yeah, we always used to go through NC, SC, GA on our way to FL. The entire drive (28 hours to Orlando, 31 or so to Miami) took two days with only my dad driving. See below.

I've spent my fair share of time stranded in airports, everything from a scheduled 5 hour layover at LHR (London HeathRow) on my way to FBU (oslo ForneBU) to a three-leg flight from YMQ ([Y]canada Montreal Quebec) to FNC (FuNChal, madeira) via CDG (paris Charles De Gaulle) and LIS (LISbon, portugal) where mrs_bat and I missed both connections (and the rescheduled second connection that they gave us after we missed our first connection) because of de-icing in Montreal.

But my NC story is a car story. We were driving down to Florida, and as usual we spent a night in NC. After we filled up the tank in SC, the car wouldn't start, and it turned out there was water in the gas. We had to find some kind of car mechanic guy to diagnose the problem and siphon the water out of the tank before we could continue on our way.

The guy at the gas station offered us a free fill, but my dad opted for his money back instead, and filled up across the street.

I'll always remember the date when that happened, because it was Friday, July 1st. Based on that, and the fact that we were in a van, probably my dad's 1986 Astro, it had to have been 1988. We had a hard time finding someone to fix the car, and we knew that if we didn't get it fixed that afternoon, we'd have to spend the next three days (Saturday, Sunday, and the Fourth of July) in SC instead of FL with no car. Luckily, we got on our way again late that Friday afternoon, and just arrived at our destination a few hours later than originally planned.
