I think that she didn't believe in the doctors. Since they would always be making a judgement (albeit based on whatever experience and facts they could muster), that's her right to do. That's why doctors cannot force you to do anything that you, your religion (however stupid it may be) or your mother say(s) you shouldn't. I think that's fair, although I think that doctor's opinion are too often not given the consideration they deserve.
