Maybe you already know this and are only kidding me, but for the curious:

gimlet (gim-l&t), n.: a small tool with a screw point, grooved shank, and cross handle for boring holes

gimlet-eyed (gim-l&t-Id), adj.: sharp-sighted

I'm accustomed to thinking of "gimlet-eyed" as being especially descriptive of critics, editors and perfectionists. "The professor read my essay with a gimlet eye, marking the tiniest deficiencies with red ink."
