I heard an interesting speculation about that. It makes more sense that Star Wars take place in the future than the past -- but what if it does? The speaker of the line "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" is not identified, which means it could be spoken by a hypothetical narrator far in the future -- for which "Star Wars" IS historical. Yet relative to US, it may still be the future.
