The speaker of the line "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" is not identified, which means it could be spoken by a hypothetical narrator far in the future -- for which "Star Wars" IS historical. Yet relative to US, it may still be the future.

I always understood the "in a galaxy far away" part to mean that the events of Lucas' saga took place in their civilization some thousands, if not millions of years ago relative to our time.
We only learned about their struggle when the "Star Wars historical documentary" (an audio-visual transmission from that galaxy) finally hit our planet in 1977, after travelling all this time from There to Here at the speed of light. LOL!
