Probably the weakest of the three films about Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), They Call Me Mister Tibbs, the middle one, is a combination murder mystery and domestic drama, set in San Francisco. The murder mystery plot, nicely supported by Martin Landau and Anthony Zerbe, among others in the supporting cast, is routine but watchable; the domestic angle, involving Tibbs and his intractable son, is terrible. Yet even in the shallowest of scenes, Poitier's presence is powerful and commanding.
