Reviews and Comments

Norman Jewison's crime drama, set against the backdrop of racism in a small Mississippi town, is a fine character piece. The mystery itself isn't so important as the racial tension and the outstanding performances by Sidney Poitier as Detective Virgil Tibbs and Rod Steiger as Police Chief Bill Gillespie. The writing is outstanding, and several scenes sizzle with tension.
