Hah! You asked for it. I will endeavour to be brief.
A "sheet" is the rope with which a sail's direction is controlled. On a modern yacht, the headsail (the one up the front) has two sheets connected to the corner. One goes down each side of the boat. The mainsail has one sheet. Total, three sheets.
A boat with all three sheets in the wind, or flying loose, is uncontrolled.
As is a drunk person.
