You don't have to get to any other levels in the maze to retrain your characters. You can retrain them to be something else if you have enough of certain attributes, when you add points or do anything else with a character's stats, look over to your right and you should see a list of the various adventurer types and what a character needs to be any one of them.

Of course, if you retrain, you start from scratch with gaining experience, but your character will keep any hit points and spell points (and spells) that he or she has already acquired, and should gain more spell points with each new level achieved.
