I'm reading Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'm about done with book 3 of the 11 book series.

I think these books are aimed at children, but even adults can be entertained. I started the first one, The Bad Beginning, after mrs_bat gave up on it because it was too depressing, but I find they're written in such a way that the depressingness becomes amusing, and I've found myself snickering out loud in places at the sheer silliness of the events befalling the Baudelaire children.

No, I haven't seen the movie. Having almost finished the books that were the basis for the movie, I can't even begin to imagine putting them on screen. The writing is not "filmic" in any way, and would not lend itself to visual representation. Most of the book has to be read to be enjoyed.

The entire series would make a great Book-A-Minute. It would probably go something like:

"Lemony Snicket: Something unfortunate is about to happen.

Violet and Klaus Baudelaire: Look! It's Count Olaf in a flimsy and transparent disguise! He's after our fortune!

Sunny Baudelaire: Glix!

Lemony Snicket: Which means something along the lines of "Yes, that is unmistakeably Count Olaf."

Mr. Poe: You children say that about everybody.

[Count Olaf hatches a plot to steal the Baudelaire fortune, but the Baudelaires expose his plans in the nick of time. Mr. Poe unwittingly lets Count Olaf get away.]

Repeat x10."
