soil test kit

I think the soil in my garden is acid. Potatoes do well, but the corn is pale and stunted.

Sending off a sample via the Co-op or County agent doesn't work. I just get a form letter that says throw 15-15-15 at it and never mentions the PH. They are just tossing soil samples from vegetable gardens. I hope farmers get better service.

So I'm going to have to do it myself. Has anybody had any experience with one of these gadgets that you just stick down in the soil and read the PH? It's the third one down (see link).
Do they work?

I don't think I need a full test. The soil is plenty rich because I use chemical fertilizer and plenty of organic mulch, but mulch tends to make soil acid. Potatoes grow well in acid soil and I am getting plenty of potatoes from just a couple of short rows.

Hmmmm. Is that the Dan Quale spelling of potatos?
