My memory of that incident is getting a little fuzzy. My spelling has always been like that.

Bad spelling at one point made a big difference in my life. Almost 50 years ago, I was working at The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Something big (I forget what.) happended in the city government and the editor told me to put a one sentence bulletin on page one and he headed out to cover the story. When the afternood edition came out, I noticed that the spelling of "bulletin" had changed. I think my spelling was "bulliten." The proofreader told me that it was correct and that was how it came to her. So I tracked the change down to a linotype operator who was an excellent speller. We have been married for 49 years now.
