The salesman is just a red herring. All he does is asks you to stop by his room, but he's never there, no matter what time of day it is (in the game).
I don't remember pretending to be the salesman at the hideout, though. Which probably means that you can only pretend to be him at the hideout if you never talked to him in the first place. Either that, or my memory is a bit fuzzy.
