If you have no elemental bonuses at all, then you don't have to worry. Normal combat is not affected by which element either creature is.

Elemental bonuses give, as you read in the instructions, bonuses against enemy creatures of that element. Your creature element is irrelevant.

Most useful, if say, you were fighting two or three creatures of the same element. Also useful if the enemy has one, more powerful creature and you want to increase your ability to fight it.
