That's the way I started out. Back when the only nickels I ever saw had buffalos on them, I noticed one that I got in change that had a V on the back. So I kept it. I was only about five, and couldn't read yet, but I knew that one was different. So by the time I was 7 I had several. That was it, until about 1946 when I was nearly 13. My uncle gave me an Australian "Flo Rin" that someone had passed on him for a half-dollar. So I was off and running, looking for coins that were different. Now, my coin collection weights about 40 pounds.
