well, it's been too long ago since I played this game. did you get the crate ? what does it say when you try to climb in the window ? if it isn't the heighth stopping you, then one of your options should be examine the area, after trying to climb in.
as far as the torch goes, many of these items you can't get til you've reached a certain level in the game. that's why we always need to know your inventory, to get a general idea of where you are.
