I don't think killing with wands is cowardly, though whenever I cast QUAKE I always feel like I'm cheating somehow as I watch 45 monsters die at once.
You might just be used to killing monsters on level 10, where you get tens of thousands of experience points per character per kill. The monsters on level 5 happen to be a bunch of weenies.
If you want to level up in a hurry, send out one or two characters at a time. I did that during my quest to teach all of my characters all the spells (which they now know).
