Murkon's Refuge: Wands

My second party seems to be killing monsters fairly easily with the wands my first party graciously gave them. However, with these wands killing 3 groups of monsters on level 5 usually gives less than 1500 experience points per character. Is killing with wands considered more cowardly than killing with swords or spells and thus less experience is given? Or have I only faced weaker monsters than before?
