I did play Bard's Tale as a kid, but the game that influenced me a lot more was Wizardry. I played that first episode of Wizardry so stinking much, nobody believed how far I had advanced my characters. By the time I got around to actually confronting Werdna (the end badguy) it wasn't really that hard.

Then I moved my characters over to Wizardry II (that game required characters to be created from the first Wizardry and ported over), and I was *already* advanced enough to clean out even the hardest monsters in that game.
