I was trying to think what this game reminded me of, and suddenly, it hit me: Bard's Tale! the 2 are very similar, with a party exploring town, pooling gold, and trying to find their way to the catacombs. Never beat it, but I sure came close(a wizard at the end kept killing me)! Here's a link:
