The difference in actual quality in Europe tends to be practically NOTHING... which is really really annoying. I found this out on this last trip. To get to our first stop - Holland - we flew on American Airlines from San Jose to Chicago O'Hare, and then on to London Heathrow... with my parents in Business Class, enjoying the typical Pretty Nice Food and Cushy Seats and Lots Of Leg Room.

Then to fly from London Heathrow to Amsterdam Schiphol, we switched to British Airways, and the difference between the two classes was VERY negligible. There was NOT a discernable difference in the seat types... there was a BIT more leg room, but that was it. And the food was just BARELY better. It rather sucked, seeing as it ate up more upgrade frequent flyer miles than it was worth. Bleh.

Of course, the BA club in Heathrow was perhaps the rulingest airline club I've ever been in, so that made it a little better. A LITTLE. But I wouldn't expect too much of a difference... unless you fly an America airline company for some reason... or unless British Airways is absolutely atypical.
