As I've mentioned before, I went on a road trip with my best friend after high school. We drove from Philadelphia to Flagstaff, AZ, and then down to Tempe. The route we followed was most of what's left of Route 66.

Anyway, I had never really been outside of Pennsylvania before, and I don't think Chrisy had seen much either. I had grown up in a forest in the mountains, which is as opposite of desert or plains as you can get.

Anyway, driving across the Midwest plains is supposed to be the most boring car trip ever. But I was fascinated. The only time I had seen a horizon berore then was at the seashore. To see all that land spreading out like a dish as far as I could see, for hours of driving, was dumbfounding.

When we reached New Mexico and spotted our first cactus and sand dunes, we almost drove off the road. :) It was so different, and yes, it was beautiful.

I couldn't live there, though... I get too homesick for the woods.
