I live in Tennessee, but we spend a lot of time in California. Like you, I haven't seen much of the northern parts, but I know my way around from the Mexican border to Marin County on the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. But I like the desert. It changes all the time. The angle of the sun, the elevation, rain fall, wind, almost anything makes the desert look different. I crossed a few desert areas in the days before air conditioned cars, and it wasn't too bad. A few years ago, my wife and I toured New Mexico and Arizona for a week, and we were flabergasted by the variety there. We crossed into Mexico briefly and visited Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Phoenix and Albuquerque. No, I wouldn't want to live in a desert, but they can be beautiful.
