Hm. I was thinking as it more of filling in the missing bits between the gameplay, and reading the author's opinion on how the characters looked based on the sprites for a book, and how they could find live actors to look like the characters (If they didn't wimp out and use computer animation or something). If the game has a huge fan base, then the fans would generally be willing to read or see a movie or book based on the game, seeing if the writer could recreate or reinvent the characters that they like.
