Something similar happened to me during a dream once. What was happening made perfect sense during the dream, of course; but when I thought about it afterwards, it didn't. It was about some danger or other threatening some town by the coast, which I appeared to live in, and the solution to this danger was for me to swim out there and dive under it. I don't remember being told to do anything apart from that in the mission briefing I got. I was shown a map, though. On it, I could see the town's harbor, with coloured-in sections some way out in the sea, signifying the danger. Then I swam out there, and it appeared to be a huge pile of plastic pieces of the colours that were on the map, though there had been something about terrorism and chemical pollution previously. I dived under it. Somewhere in the middle, I started to run out of air, so I tried to surface by climbing through all the (soft) plastic. Nearly at the top, I came to a dead end and started to suffocate, trying to shove the last piece of plastic (which was blue) out of the way. Then I woke up and noticed I had been holding my breath in my sleep with my head under the blanket.
