This has been kicked around for a long time, especially in the scifi community. There was a really good Star Trek about it (Next Generation). . . anyone remember the Moriarity episodes?

Another theory is that the universe is a life form. Atoms have a central core (the sun) orbited by electrons (planets). These atoms make up cells (galaxies) which make up an organism (the universe). . . .it's an interesting theory, and one that we could not disprove without going outside of the universe. After all, if humans were small enough that 250 billion of us could fit on an electron, it's highly doubtful we'd recognize our molecule or the cell our molecule was in for what it was. The scale would be too large. This theory, of course has a flip side in which each of our cells are actually galaxies teeming with intelligent life.

Interestingly enough, you could work this theory to explain why the universe expands at varying rates. Growth spurts of a child ;)
