Books that make me cry... posted by dingdong on Friday, February 2, 2001, at 00:23:27:
> You know, after participating in the thread that involves CDs that we're listening to, I thought I'd start a discussion about books. I have a lot of books that I love (I'm a bit of a bookworm, to the detriment of other things that I should be doing at the time), but there are 2 books that stand out as my favourite: > > The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien > and > Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
I have never read The Lord of the Rings. In Journalism last semester, I mentioned that I'd never read it, and my best friend and gabby almost couldn't believe I've never read it...I still haven't. Well, maybe I'll find a copy of it at the booksale tomorrow. If I do, I promise everyone I'll read it. LOL.
Speaking of books that make you cry, though...the ones that come into my mind are the following books:
"She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb - It's about a girl who goes through a whole bunch of terrible physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and she has to struggle with those memories and emotional scars for the rest of her life.
"A Child Called 'It'" by Dave Pelzer - It's a true story about a little boy (the author) whose parents (particularly his mother) treated him TERRIBLY. The abuse depicted in this book made me feel sick to my stomach, and there were times when I literally had to put the book down in order to get myself calmed down.
"The Cross and the Switchblade" by David Wilkerson - It's a true story about how the author goes into the New York ghettos and teaches teen gang members about God.
Well, there's the three that I remembered first. Of those, "A Child Called 'It'" was the worst...no, I mean, it was a GREAT, brutally honest book. It just shook me up and made me cry the most.
