Um, I beg to differ on these points. Your first point makes the assumption that the people who control the nuclear weapons are completely rational and not prone to rash decisions. However, the most likely cause of a nuclear launch today would probably be the expectation that someone else would launch and a subsequent attempt to make a pre-emptive strike and ensure that if you went, they went with you. Beyond that, there are people out there who act as suicide bombers already. Do you think an anti-US suicide bomber would NOT set off a nuke within US borders if he had the opportunity?

As for the second point, I'm not even sure what you mean by this. People who start wars are often not too concerned with how much damage they do. Extremely advanced weaponry will make wars take place much FASTER, but will not prevent them from happening. I look at the Persian Gulf War as a good example. I am quite certain that you are not trying to say that technology has advanced a great deal since then, and you cannot argue that the technology was not available to the participants in that case-- The US has probably the most advanced technology of anyone. (I do not say that out of national pride-- I am Canadian. I simply believe it to be true.) I do agree, though, that a war like the second World War could not happen again. Anything that lasted that long would almost certainly escalate to a nuclear war. (Heck, World War II was ENDED by nuclear weapons, and probably would have ended a lot sooner if they had been available sooner.)

I think that's all I have to say there.
