Last time I had that test done on my eyes, it was a really bright, sunny day outside, so they gave me these really funky ugly stupid cheapo sunglasses that were so dark they were almost opaque to wear. They really helped, but I haven't worn them since for obvious reasons. (they're funky ugly stupid and cheap.)
My optometrist told me to bring my own shades to the appointment. Unfortunately, I couldn't find mine, so I ended up borrowing Amanda's... Too small, and they had clear plastic frames which AMPLIFIED most of the light coming in. Not the best solution. :-)

I know the "standard" black-text-on-white background is relatively difficult to read, too. > > I wouldn't call the background on Palm Pilots or LCD calcs "light-grey" but more of a medium range grey...maybe 50% of black. He's probably meaning a really light, faint tint, maybe in the 5-15% range. I can see how that would be easier on the eyes. Sometimes when my eyes are bothering me I'll adjust the brightness and contrast on my monitor to approximate that effect.
I agree. "Black on light grey" to me would not include any kind of calculator- or Palm Pilot-type LCD display. I think the best example (for me) of the black on grey scheme came from the old Infocom HHGTTG game on the Commodore 64. It was very easy on the eyes. The other Infocom games used the standard Commodore 64 colors of light blue on dark blue, which I also found very soothing. I actually find it kind of frustrating that "modern" software seems to prefer to look like text on paper. Of course, most dialogs for Windows use black on grey, so they do have some idea of what is comfortable...

Don "I just realized that I may have dissed RinkWorks' typical black on white color scheme. Or maybe I've got Sam thinking about changing the backgrounds to grey... Of course, Slapdash City doesn't have a grey background available, so we may be out of luck. ;-)" Monkey
