I was looking over that strategy guide, and the gain/loss ratios in "Potions and Traps" didn't seem right to me. I calculate them as:
1:1, 1.33:1, 1.5:1, 1.6:1, 1.67:1, 1.71:1
(Rounded off to two places)

Even at level 0, you break even in the long run, and starting at level 1, you will gain in the long run on these squares. These ratios are the same in EF2, since the values are simply scaled down to 70% of the values in EF1.
