Actually, a proper Black and Tan is made with an ale or a lager poured into your glass half-way (preferably Harp if you like the lager, Bass Pale Ale), then you pour a stout like Guinness so it floats atop the ale. If you do it properly (slowly pour it over a spoon) there will be a clean division between the two.

I prefer the drink with Harp.
