No, it wasn't silly. It wasn't good either. It was an nice idea, poorly executed. The nice idea: think of all the aliens you could include without having to pony up for expensive latex face appliances! ...but poorly executed: They looked like, well,... cartoons. The nice idea: Have some of the original actors do their characters' voice overs! ..but poorly executed: They sounded exceptionally lifeless, flat, and/or bored much of the time. Very noticeable & puzzling. The nice idea: Follow up on some of the original episodes' storylines! ...but poorly executed--well, maybe it wasn't the execution in this case but the audience. The Saturday morning crowd viewing the cartoon probably didn't overlap much with original Trek fans, so continuing a storyline didn't have that, "oh yeah, I always wondered whatever happened to Harry Mudd!" spark of recognition.
