Rt. 1 more or less goes along with I-95, but it's an older road, and longer, too, starting at the very tippy top of Maine and, rather than stopping in Miami, continuing down across the Florida Keys, which would be a fantastic climax to a north to south trip on that road. You also get closer to the ocean in Florida than 95 will take you -- Rt. 1 is RIGHT ON the ocean, practically. I followed the two roads down the East Coast on the map not long ago, and I remember there being other advantages to Rt. 1 over 95, but I don't remember them all now.

Do you mean 95 is the route number? I thought it was the speed limit.

Speaking of US-1, when I was a kid in Florida*, we used to live on US-1. It was the main route north and south in those days. I sat on the porch and did a lot of day dreaming about where those cars were going and where they had been. Since then, I've driven about 90% of that highway, including all of it in Florida and most of it from Georgia to Maryland. I was on it briefly in New York and Massachuttes and even drove a little way into Maine. I hope to do the rest someday.

Just a tip for New Englanders who drive I-95 to Miami; Come off the interstate in the Carolinas and drive Hwy 17 a while. It's closer to the ocean. I suppose that's why they call it the "Ocean Highway." And in Florida, go over to A1A which is mainly on the east coast barrier islands. It's slow, but worth it. My right foot is getting twitchie again.
