Well, I believe that guard wants something for his troubles.
I believe the item comes from searching around. Now I don't remember which parts, but some of the game requires you to preform certain actions more than once. So keep searching for stuff all over where you can go. It's a good rule in adventure games.

The hook is for another place. Don't worry about it yet.
