Director Jacques Tourneur's chillingly effective horror film revolves around a woman's mystical heritage. She's haunted by it, and the other stars of the film are haunted by something a little more tangible. A feeling of mounting horror is built by what is lurking at the edges of what is seen; alas, the climax falls short of the mark.
