With Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Disney breaks from its traditional roots in animation. Atlantis is a surprisingly impressive animated science fiction adventure sure to inspire anyone who is still a kid at heart. It's got guns and action and exploration and comradeship and lost civilizations and mysticism and betrayal and dangerous villains -- the works. I loved Atlantis, its likeable characters, and sense of high adventure. It finds a tone balanced between sincerity and humor and goes for thrills instead of shocks, never, as is the case with too many live action adventures, getting so heavy-handed as to break the spell it has on an idealistic imagination like mine.
