Oscar Watch 2006: Reactions to the Winners

Congratulations to one of America's finest directors -- not that Martin Scorsese really needed an Oscar to validate his body of work, but nonetheless it was wonderful to see him win.

RinkWorks has the complete list of winners, both for the Oscars and also the Academy Awards Predictions Game.

Congratulations also go to "jebediah," regular commenter "siochembio," and "automator" who took the prizes in our Oscars game.

Trivia Question: Fan Mail

Our mystery person today holds the record for the most fan mail ever. It probably helps that he's been working around the world for nearly 80 years.

Film Spotlight: A Bridge Too Far

Richard Attenborough's 1977 film A Bridge Too Far is in many ways a remarkable war picture, a World War II film that focuses on a major setback for the Allies. Epic in scope, the movie features a tremendous cast, full of huge stars. With acting salaries what they are today, it is unlikely you could see a movie with stars of the caliber of Laurence Olivier, Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, and Robert Redford all at once.

The script, by William Goldman, is worth mentioning as well. It's a war movie that takes quite a bit of time getting to the action, and we feel the best stuff in the film is the build-up to the military action that is the movie's centerpiece. Many war movies skimp on the set-up, but here Goldman is able to introduce us to the gigantic cast of characters while seamlessly providing a ton of exposition.

It's not a perfect movie, though we disagree a bit on what the weak parts are, but compelling and worth watching.

Good Bad Movie: Sheena, Queen of the Jungle

Do you like Tarzan? Would you prefer it if Tarzan were Tanya Roberts and the story were completely ridiculous? Then Sheena, Queen of the Jungle is the good bad movie for you: a jungle movie so lame that even Sam doesn't like it!
