I'm down in Georgia right now. This morning I saw a large black snake in the yard where my grandchildren play. He was between four and five feet long.
They get larger as you go south. One theory is that they only hibernate for a short time in areas with short winters, so they are out eating and growing for a longer period. In southern Florida where they don't hibernate at all, they get huge.
This one was moving rather slowly. I wonder if it was dehydrated. It eased off down a hill in the direction of the nearest stream. I watched it cross the street, figuring I might need to direct traffic around it, but nobody came by.
