Early Years: Time Machine: Mountain climber's pick?

So close and yet so far ... I cannot figure out how to get the stupid pick!! Here's my inventory:

A Wooden Canoe
A Sharp Knife
A Round, Crumbly Stone
A Collection of Diamonds
A Paddle
A Wolf-Shaped Idol

Am I missing something in my inventory? The game won't let me use any of my current items to try to get the pick. Any clues would be VERY much appeciated! I have a sinking feeling that I'm just overlooking something very obvious ...
