Outlaws - what's the cord for?

I've got stuck on Outlaws. I'm staying at Pepperby's. I've worked out how to take dinner there. I recently acquired the cord, so I have:

27 dollars, your gun, matches, wood, altar cloth, hat pin, feather, key, playing cards, cord, cabbage, spittoon.

I have no idea how to use my newly acquired cord. I also can't find anyone left to talk to or anywhere to go. The guy who wants to sell me piano wire is always out.

What's a hint for me?
