I remember reading a book about vampires in which it was actually possible to see vampires in a mirror, but the image in the mirror didn't match what you'd see if you looked at the vampire directly. The vampires cast a glamour on anyone who looked at them (including other vampires) so that they looked young, relatively healthy, and - yes - well-groomed, but the mirror showed what they *really* looked like.

It's one possibility, anyway.
