Flying standby is always an adventure. Our daughter has been stuck in Washington for 24 hours trying to get a flight to Atlanta. She is a flight attendant and worked flights to Europe and back and now she just wants to get home.
The crazy part is that she got on two different planes and was bumped off both times. In almost 25 years of flying standby, I have only been bumped after getting on board one time. Usually, the plane just fills up and leaves you in the gate area. You have to go looking for another flight. I've missed as many as seven flights in one day, but only once was I actually on the plane.
If you are thinking "Why?" it's because standby is cheaper. It isn't as cheap as it once was, but still relatively cheap. As you may have guessed, I am realtively cheap myself.
Just got a call! She is in Atlanta and headed for home. That means we (the sitters) will be headed home soon. Driving. Howard
