You're probably remembering the Fox special on Robbie Knievel's jump over the Grand Canyon. He didn't get permission from the government to go over it in a rocket cycle either, so instead he made a deal with (I think) a nearby Indian reservation that had part of the "Grand Canyon" on its property. That part of the canyon wasn't much more than a drainage ditch really, and was only about 150 feet across. Robbie over-shot the landing ramp (going about 200 feet) and crashed on the landing.
