> Right. Now that you mention it, I think I did get one previously from the coin guy, and I've already replaced the drill bit. Can't find anything in the caverns, though. I thought it might be something to do with the one lost in the stream up north, but I checked all around the water in the sandstone caverns and don't see anything. Is there something else I need to do first?

I think the one that bounces into the stream just does so to drive you insane. You can't retrieve it. :)

Tried using the pickaxe in one of the red sandstone rooms? (I don't remember which one, but that it was red. And probably not the one with the stream.)
